    • Purpose of the research project:

    To conduct research (mainly in the form of an on-line questionnaire although some paper copies may be distributed via parishes), to help ascertain (mainly young peoples’) views and attitudes with regards to existing and potential utilisation of technology by the Church, as a response to  Pope Benedict XVI’s 2010 directive for priests ‘ to discover new digital possibilities to proclaim the Word of God and carry out their ministry’.
    • Statement concerning nature and extent of participation:

    Participants will be asked to complete the questionnaire on-line, by privately logging onto a designated URL. For the purpose of completing the questionnaire, they will also need to log onto and review at least one further church website
    In the case of paper questionnaires, participants are required to use internet resources in order to complete the hard copy questionnaire.  Responsibility for collection of these from participating parishes, will be the responsibility of the researcher.
    For the purpose of subsequently producing a radio/t.v. programme based on the findings of the above questionnaire, participants may, at a later date, be contacted by the researcher to be given the opportunity to participate in any or all of the following: recorded/filmed group discussions, private interview (for public broadcast) panel discussion or public debate etc..   (written consent for participation will be obtained from each participant for every event)

     

    • Clarification on the amount of time required from participants

    The questionnaire will take participants a minimum of 30 minutes to complete
    • Statement on the planned outcome: e.g. book, article, conference presentation and whether the participant will receive information on the research findings

    It is anticipated that findings from this research may be published within an MA dissertation by the researcher and will eventually be published for all participants to view at the same URL at which the questionnaire originated.
    • Statement on how the information gained from the participant will be used and who will have access to it: 

    Statistics compiled from this research may be made available by the researcher for use in other media e.g. radio/t.v. magazines and press, etc
    • Statement on how the information will be stored, and for how long.

     The information will be stored for as long as legally permitted.
    • Clarification of whether a participant may be identified in the research. Specific written permission must be obtained if this is the case.

    Participants may be identified and contacted about their responses from the contact details which they have supplied.  They will not be personally identified in the research, without their written consent.
    • Confirmation that the participant can withdraw from the research project at any time without penalty

    As per participants signed statement (form EC2)  ‘participation in this research is voluntary and participants may withdraw at any time during the project, without having to give a reason’
    • Confirmation that there is a complaints procedure which a participant can invoke.

    Any complaints from participants about the above research or how it has been conducted may be directed to the Ethics Committee at Heythrop College, University of London, Kensington Square, London, W8 9LZ  020 7795 4239
